Day 46, last day at the Press

It felt a little surreal today, it was my last day at the Press today and I wanted to say goodbye to Coeur d’Alene. It was a beautiful sunny, hot day and so I went outside and walked around, taking photos as I went. I also took a photo of the CDA Press building for memories sake. When I got back from my romp around the town, Mike, the head editor, called everybody’s attention over to my cubicle and he gave me a going away speech. I was touched and it made me feel appreciated for my work. He then presented me with a check as a thank you and sent everyone back to work. When I was recovering from the surprise, Shawn asked me to go to Super 1 Foods and take a photo of someone buying groceries to use as art for a story on the grocery tax going away in Idaho… This would be my last photo submitted to the press.

I’ve been so grateful for my experience with the newspaper. It has taught me so much and it has given me the desire to become better every day and go after what I want. What’s the next step? Publications for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here I come!

Day 40

Today was a pretty slow day. I went out and took some stand alone photos that we didn’t really need but I had to do something. And then at 4pm there was an appointment at the senior center in Post Falls where a little girl wanted to give back to the community. She got her whole class to color pictures of flowers and spring things to bring spring inside for the seniors and they were giving them out at that time. That was pretty much it for today.

Day 38

It was a lazy Saturday, at least the start of it. There was a fun event to end the basketball season. It was an event at NIC for high school seniors called the All Star North vs. South game. There was a fans free throw contest, a players 3 point contest, and a slam dunk contest as well as a girls and boys game. I could only stay for about 10 minutes of the boys game though because I needed to hurry back down town and catch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. That was really fun! I got a mini Irish flag.

Day 25

It was the first Saturday that I’ve worked here at the Press and it started out really weird! When I walked in the employee entrance all the lights were off, I was expecting it to be a joke! There was no one working, so I got to my desk and thank goodness there is a window in my cubicle because I didn’t know where the light switch was. A little bit later I got a text from the reporter that was working and she asked if I was on my way to the legislative meeting down at the library… I was never told a time so I wasn’t on my way, but it was just down the street and I figured I’d go a few minutes early so I could walk. It was a legislative meeting alright.

Next on the agenda was a gymnastics event happening down at the resort, apparently there were athletes from 11 states and also a bunch of locations in Canada. That was really fun to see, but gymnastics photos are tricky to take! Very different from the other sports that I’ve shot. I went yesterday too and determined to go back because I didn’t like any of my photos. This time I got some that I liked alright.

Thinking that since Shawn was still gone and it was still only me taking photos, I went to look for a stand alone after the gymnastics thing. It was a really sunny day and so I went down by the beach and the City Park to look for people. I found this guy with a metal detector and a go-pro on his head looking for stuff in the park and so I got a photo of him, he was actually pretty nice.

IS DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY ART?

photocrati gallery

There are those people out there who when they see documentary photography, or any photography for that matter, they say that it isn’t art. The only reason that I have been able to come up with for this reaction is that they must be unhappy with life. Documentary photography is a snippet of life. Regardless of whether it was intended to be beautiful/”artistic” or not doesn’t really matter. What matters is that we look long enough to stretch ourselves so that we can see the beauty that is there.  These are humans; humans are beautiful. They are children of the almighty, the greatest artist. If the creation of the Master’s hand isn’t art or beautiful, I don’t know what is.
